Antonio’s parents came to the United States from Cuba back in 1980 during the Mariel boat lifts with him and his sister on a raft made from tires, wood, and cardboard.
Halfway to Florida, they are caught in a storm and his father falls to the side and never comes back up. His mother dives after him and orders Antonio to stay on the boat and watch his sister, who is feverish. Antonio is afraid he will never see his mother again either, but she eventually returns alone.
