When the Spider Aliens, a race of blood-sucking extraterrestrial arachnoids, launch a major invasion of Earth, they infect Grandmother, the freewill caretaker of Japan, with a carcino–pod that destroys her intellect. When a technotumor spreads throughout Grandmother’s brain, she creates giant drone colossuses in an attempt to escape the pain.
In a bid to save Grandmother, Tohru Nakadai, the 42nd Rai, shatters the technotumor, which explodes and destroys Grandmother’s brain. Subsequently, the colossuses become inactive.
After Grandmother abandons Japan in self-contained isolated orbit over the Earth, the Healers Restoration Underground, a group who believe that Tohru allowed her to leave and placed Shinji Tanaka and the Humanists in power, rebuild a colossus with pieces from drones he dismembered.
Though the colossus speaks to Tohru as Grandmother used to, when it crushes a Humanist soldier, he realizes it is not really Grandmother and drops it into a pool of molten metal.
