The hilltop retreat owned by Wilson Haverford Duerst, man obsessed with learning the secret of eternal life from Aram Anni-Padda, the immortal Armstrong, is, in the words of Aram, the most fabulous party palace since Nero’s court.
During the retreat’s heyday, a special train brought Hollywood big shots up there for the weekend, but following Duerst’s apparent demise the state seized the property for back taxes and it became California’s most dependable source of revenue.
